Aurum Theatre in Kuala Lumpur is an ultra-luxury movie theater experience and is part of the large Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) chain. We visited their latest branch in The Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur and it was a truly amazing experience. With an impressive surface area of over 11,000 square meters spread over four floors, this cinema offers the ultimate ultra-luxury entertainment experience in Malaysia.
Unique and exceptionally luxurious movie theater
The cinema has eleven beautifully designed movie halls, each with a unique interior and comfortable seats. Depending on the movie, you can choose the extremely luxurious loungers, luxury deck chairs or regular (albeit also great) chairs. In all cases, a fleece blanket is provided, so you no longer need to bring warm clothes as this used to be important to bring along as the temperatures in the movie theatre were sometimes ice cold.
For the ultimate in comfort, Comfort Cabins are screened rooms inspired by old-fashioned theaters, equipped with luxurious reclining chairs based on Stressless technology. These chairs are so comfortable that there is a risk you will miss half the movie because you fall asleep at some point.
For those looking for an even more luxurious experience, the two Getha Lux Suites offer additional amenities such as a mini-fridge, charging points, dimmable lighting and even comfortable house slippers. This is truly a great experience, although an individual visit comes with a hefty price tag (you pay for two sunbeds next to each other).
For a more thematic experience, there are ‘Escape Studios’ rooms, each inspired by different movie themes and pop culture references. Examples are the ‘La Romance Hall’, inspired by Paris, and the ‘Neon Nippon Hall’, which mimics the lively atmosphere of Shinjuku, Tokyo.
Cost of a movie ticket
If you choose the luxury Getha recliners, it will probably be the most luxurious movie theater experience ever. It is also the most expensive, because RM350 for two recliners is not cheap, especially in Malaysia. This price is on the high side, but it does include a meal from the menu and a drink.
The luxury recliner loungers (Comfort Cabins) can be booked individually for RM150 per ticket and also include a snack and a drink. Unfortunately, when we arrived there was no good movie playing in the Getha Lux theater, so we ended up watching a movie in the Cabins. This was really great, but hopefully we can try out the Getha loungers sometime in the future.
During the movie, you can scan the QR code to view the menu. You can then order online and pay by credit card or PayPal. The prices of the food and drinks were reasonable.
Culinary delight
Aurum Theatre has a pleasant and beautifully designed lounge restaurant. Visitors can enjoy a varied assortment of culinary delights to complete the luxurious movie theater experience. Restaurant ‘Hokkaido Table’ serves unique Japanese-Italian fusion cuisine, including an exclusive Omakase experience. For a more informal atmosphere, there is the ‘Kissa CafĂ© and Diner’, which serves a mix of Japanese and Western dishes. Both eateries are open to both movie-goers and the general public, and were completely full of people at lunchtime.
Three Aurum Theatres in Malaysia
There are two extremely luxurious Aurum Theatres in Kuala Lumpur, one inside The Exchange TRX and one inside The Gardens Mall. These are two of the most luxurious shopping centers in Kuala Lumpur, so it is not surprising that you will find the ultra-luxurious cinema there. The 3rd Aurum Theatre location can be found inside The Mall, Midvalley Southkey in Johor Bahru in the south of the country. Considering the enormous success of this unique cinema format, we expect to see more new branches opening in the near future, despite the rather hefty price tag.
How to get there?
The Exchange TRX is located above Tun Razak Exchange metro station, where the green Kajang metro line and the yellow Putrajaya metro line stop. The green KGL Kajang metro line stops at Bukit Bintang, Merdeka and Pasar Seni, among other places, where you can transfer to the metro to KL Sentral.
It is also about a 10-minute walk from Bukit Bintang. Of course, you can also take a Grab to get there if you can’t easily catch a metro.
The Aurum Theater is located on the 3rd floor of The Exchange TRX. If you go up the large escalator in the center of the shopping center, you will immediately find yourself in front of the theater’s impressive entrance.
